"Resisting occupation is a patriotic duty and to support it is a moral and legal imperative…and an honor of which we are proud," said Assad in a speech to the 25th Economic Summit of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (COMCEC) in Istanbul.
So the Golan Heights wasn't an issue until Ehud Barak made it an issue. This is all the justification that Assad needed to funnel money, provide training, and come up with his own terror strategy. Speaking out of both sides of one's mouth is a politicians talent. The despots in the Middle East have mastered it and taken it to new heights. Doublespeak and red herrings are stated with conviction. The conviction, however, is as empty as the rhetoric.
"This does not contradict our unceasing desire to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the return of the occupied territories, especially the occupied Syrian Golan, but the failure of negotiations to restore all our rights would make resistance an alternative solution," he said, in an apparent allusion to acts of violence and terror against Israel committed by "resistance" movements such as Hizbullah.
Had Syria not attacked Israel, this discussion wouldn't be taking place. Now, as I have stated often, the despot wants back what he lost legally through a war his country and it's allies started. If Assad would spend half as much effort trying to build a prosperous nation as he does spewing hatred to tear one down, Syria would have a legitimate place at the the adult table.
The Syrian president went on to say that the real cause of the problem in the region was "the Zionist occupation" which "we must begin to work to eliminate."
What Assad means is the entire "Zionist Occupation" including the very land Israel is presently on. Does anyone else note the hypocrisy of the islamists denying the legality of Israel approved by the UN, then going to the UN to continue their war against Israel?
